How our Technology Assessments work.
We can provide a number of technology assessments. However, we always recommend starting with the “Technology Overview“. This is designed to provide an independent assessment of a company’s technology landscape. The assessments are written in a clear, concise and “jargon-free” style, specifically aimed at a senior management audience.
We also provide a number of “deep dive” assessments focussing on dedicated technology areas (listed below).
The objective of our assessments is to identify both strengths and weaknesses in the use of technology and to help businesses align their technology strategy with their business strategy.
These reports aren’t just a list of problems; they provide a logical and organised foundation to help you make informed decisions that provide the best value for your business. If we can help you resolving issues or with implimentation of any identified improvments we will make this clear on each assessment performed.

Our assessments are provided in a couple of formats. An online interactive view which allows sub-categories to be “drilled” down to, and/or a printable PDF report . Each assessment is essentially broken into 2 areas. The first being the “core assessment” made up of a number of categories and sub-categories which are scored and detailed. The report then displays a “heat-mapped” set of recommendations grouped into priority order. We use a number of metics to work out priorities. Such as “risk”, “business impact”, “cost”, “ease of implimentation”, “pain being experienced.” etc. For a fuller explanation of the “Technology Overview” see below.
What’s contained in the Technology Overview Assessment?
Detailed below is some detail relating to the technology overview assessment we provide. Note that we also provide many other assessments which are “deep dive” assessments and are very similar in structure to the technology overview.
All of our reports are structured around a series of scorecards that detail how well different areas of technology are being controlled and governed. We use a simple 5-point scale for scoring, which is easy to understand:
- Acceptable – An average score is between 2-3 out of 5
- Good – A good score is between 3 and 4
- Excellent – An excellent score is anything greater than 4
Each scorecard can be drilled down to show sub-category scores, offering a granular view of performance. This comprehensive approach allows us to pinpoint specific areas for improvement. The overall average score for a technology landscape is calculated and noted at the beginning of the report.
Key Areas We Assess in the Overview.
- IT Operations – This area assesses the processes and services administered by the IT department, including support for hardware and software.
- Infrastructure & Operations – We look at the configuration, installation, and maintenance of technology, as well as disaster recovery and help desk services.
- People & Resources – This section is about how people and money are planned, scheduled, and allocated to achieve the greatest organisational value.
- Service Planning & Architecture – We assess the framework for planning, designing, building, and managing an organisation’s technology services.
- Financial Management – The goal here is to assess how a company reduces costs to ensure a successful business future.
- Security & Risk – This crucial area evaluates the management of risks associated with IT, including security, compliance, and disaster recovery.
- Automation and AI – We delve into what automation and AI technolgies are in place and advise on new initiatives or improvements that could be made.
- Applications – We review the full lifecycle of software applications, from operations and maintenance, to upgrades.
- Data & BI – This category assesses the use of software and data to make more data-driven decisions.
- Web Site – We assess the performance and technologies used.
Providing Actionable Recommendations
Following the assessment we provide a detailed set of recommendations that we can assist you with to address the identified issues. These recommendations are categorised by priority:
- Critical – These are the most urgent issues that require immediate attention to mitigate significant business risks.
- Important – These are significant issues that, while not as urgent as the critical ones, are still vital for improving the overall technology landscape.
- Useful – These are areas for future focus that can help streamline processes, improve efficiency, and optimise costs.
By outlining these issues and providing clear, actionable recommendations, we help businesses move from identifying problems to implementing effective solutions. Our goal is to ensure that technology becomes a strategic asset that supports, rather than hinders, business growth.
